Heritage Museum

It was a matter of prestige to CKGM Government Govt. College Perambra to start a Heritage Museum in the college. The Heritage Museum began functioning during the academic year 2005-06 by the initiative of the faculties and students of the Department of History. The college situates in an area where a number of megalithic burials are found. The Post Graduate Department of History of the College has initiated a programme of salvaging archaeological remains with the co-operation of the local community. The megalithic burial urns and materials collected from the burial sites are brought to the Department of History and kept in a museum which is available for the researchers and students of History. The Department of History has also launched a project to collect the artifacts and other materials connected with the everyday life of the people around the College so that the contemporary life of the immediate community could be reconstructed in the future.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To collect, preserve and exhibit the historical and cultural information and artefacts from the locality.
  2. Collection and conservation of contemporary materials.
  3. To introduce the local people to the history of their region.
  4. To create an awareness among the people, of the importance in protecting the material remains of the past.
  5. Arranging visits to local historical sites

FUNCTIONING

An advisory committee has been formed for the efficient functioning of the museum. The members of Heritage Club took leadership to the collection and preservation of artifacts. Dr. Sheeba K.A, Asst. Professor of History and Kala Rajan, Asst. Professor of History together coordinate the entire activities of Heritage Museum.

Artifacts

The megalithic burial urns and materials collected from the burial sites are brought to the Department of History and kept in the museum. Urns, human remains, terracotta figurines and iron weapons of megalithic period are kept in this museum. Old coins, thaliyolas, old utensils, agricultural instruments, household articles and tribal weapons are also kept.
